The Purple Cloaked Pirate

Entry Three

James woke up not to the comforting smell of fish, but to the smell of sweaty boys undressing to bathe. He rolled over and sat up. All the boys were in line to shower, except one. The one boy stood by his bunk. He had curly black hair and looked nervous. James barely remembered him from last evening, when Bartholomew told him his mother died and brought him here. James undressed and waited his turn for the shower, his eyes locked on the boy. He looked the same age as James and maybe an inch taller.
The line move forward and James stepped up. One of the boys who had just finished his shower walked over to the boy."Hey Cooper," he snarled. "Not showering?" Cooper looked at his feet and replied. "Leave me alone Walt." Walt danced around Cooper and put his fists up. "Wanna go?" he asked. James instantly realized that if this smaller boy, Cooper, said yes, he would be pounded as the other boy was much taller and bulkier. Nonetheless, Cooper said yes. Walt tried to quickly kick Cooper but he grabbed Walt's leg and pushed him back. Cooper then punched Walt in the gut and pushed him over. James was astounded at this boy's fighting skill. The boy behind James gave him an impatient nudge and James realized it was his turn in the showers.

After James' shower he dressed and went to eat breakfast. He noticed that Cooper was alone eating toast and fish. James approached him and sat. "That was some nice fighting," James said "where'd you learn to do that?" Cooper looked up and grinned . "I dunno," was all he said before going back to eating. "Well," James said "It was pretty cool." After that James and Cooper made some small talk, but mostly ate in silence. When the principal of the orphanage told them it was free time James and Cooper got up and went outside. James grinned when he saw Robert. James bounded over and greeted his friend. "I'm not playing with an orphan" Robert said dismissively. James was crushed. He walked over to a tree and slumped down. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Walt wrestle another boy to the ground. James' heart felt just as pinned as that boy.

The day seemed to go by quickly. It seemed just after James went back inside, he was done with his schoolwork and outside. After schoolwork he went to the beach. To James' surprise, Cooper was there. James hid in a bush and watched as Cooper pulled back some other bushes revealing a small raft and an oar. Cooper tugged them out and began pushing the raft into the water. James got up from his hiding spot and approached Cooper. "Where are you going?" James asked. Cooper jumped and looked behind him.
"You startled me," he said "I'm going to explore a little, wanna come?"
"Sure," James said as he clambered on the raft. The two boys sailed out and began their exploration. Soon they saw a small island. There wasn't much on this island, just a couple stones and a tree, but the boys had a blast making up fun stories and running around. James clambered up a stone pretending he was Blackbeard atop his ship. "Aye!" James said "me and me matteys ought to abandon me ship!" With that he jumped off the rock and made a large splash in the water. A few seconds later James came up. "Cooper! Cooper!" he called out "You gotta see this!" Cooper dove in as well and James showed him a small cavern hidden beneath the island. The boys walked inside and saw some burnt torches, a trunk and a beaten up boat. James scampered to the trunk and opened it. Inside were a few things. A rusty black and purple sword, a scroll with a drawing of a purple pirate on it, and a note. James pulled out the note and read it aloud. "Today I leave for a new life. A life of glory. No one can stop me!"
"Umm, creepy." Cooper said. He grabbed the sword and flipped it over in his palm. "Feels natural." Cooper said. The boys decided they should go, but would come back soon enough. They swam up and floated away on their raft.
